Welcome to Portland, Michigan
Welcome
to the City of Portland's Web site. Portland, the "City of Two
Rivers," is located at the confluence of the Grand and Lookingglass
Rivers about midway between Lansing and Grand Rapids on I-96. Our
residents enjoy a wide variety of recreational opportunities on the
rivers, our many athletic fields and parks, and our growing
"rails-to-trails" system. Our Riverwalk will soon loop the entire
City, connecting all of our schools and parks. Portland is truly a
walkable community and draws visitors from the greater Lansing and
Grand Rapids areas, where many of our residents work. Our residents
enjoy the best of both worlds -- urban and rural. They have easy
access to the economic and cultural opportunities offered by two
major cities and universities. But they come home to a small,
close-knit community of established neighborhoods and businesses
where people care for and about their neighbors. This community
spirit makes Portland a hometown we are proud of. And Portland pride
is growing. New buildings on our east-side business corridor, the
renovation of historic buildings downtown, and our new City Hall
that's rising in the heart of our downtown business district show
that Portland is building for the future on the solid foundation of
its past.
Portland is also a full-service city with employees who work hard for their neighbors. The City provides water, wastewater, and electric utilities. The Portland Police, Fire, and Ambulance Departments provide necessary emergency services in addition to community education services. The City of Portland also offers extensive parks and recreational opportunities. The City and surrounding area is served by excellent public and parochial school systems.
The City Council hopes that city residents and visitors find all the information they're looking for on this Web site. Let us know what you think.
